Gotrax & Hiboy Not Charging? Fix the “Green Light” Error (Fuse & Reset Guide)

You plug in your Gotrax GXL V2 or Hiboy S2. The charger light turns Green immediately.

You think, “Great, it’s full!” But when you turn the scooter on, the battery bar is empty, or it dies after 50 feet.

This is the infamous “False Green Light” error. It is especially common on budget scooters like Gotrax and Hiboy, and almost always happens to Bird/Lime auction scooters.

The Green Light does not mean “Full.” It means “I am disconnected.” The charger is blind; it cannot see the battery. Here is the step-by-step guide to fixing the connection on your specific model.

Reason 1: The “Fuse” Issue (Common on Hiboy & Gotrax)

If you have a Hiboy S2 or a Gotrax GXL/Apex, there is a 90% chance you have blown the hidden safety fuse. This happens if you plug the charger into the wall before the scooter, causing a spark.

The Fix:

  1. Open the Deck: Remove the screws on the bottom of the scooter (usually a Phillips head).

  2. Trace the Port: Find the charging port where you plug the cable in. Follow the two thin wires (Red/Black) leading away from it.

  3. Find the Capsule: You will see a small black or clear plastic cylinder on the Red wire. Unscrew it.

  4. Replace the Glass Fuse: Inside is a generic “glass tube” fuse. If the wire inside is broken or black, it is dead.

    • Cost: $2 at any auto parts store.

    • Result: Replace it, and the charger light will instantly turn RED (charging).

Reason 2: The “BMS Sleep” Mode (Common on Xiaomi & Segway)

If you left your Xiaomi M365 or Segway Ninebot in the garage for winter, the battery voltage dropped too low. The BMS (Battery Management System) has gone into “Sleep Mode” to protect the cells. The charger sees “0 Volts” and refuses to start.

The “Regen” Trick (Wake It Up): You need to force a voltage spike to wake the computer up.

  1. Turn the scooter ON.

  2. Find a safe, steep hill or driveway.

  3. Ride (or coast) down the hill and squeeze the brakes to engage Regenerative Braking.

  4. Do this 3-4 times. The motor will push energy back into the battery, raising the voltage just enough to wake the BMS.

  5. Plug it in immediately: The charger should now turn RED.

Reason 3: The “Bird/Lime” Auction Scooter Problem

Did you buy a used Bird or Lime scooter from an auction? The “Green Light” is permanent because the battery is locked.

Rental scooters use “Proprietary” batteries that wait for a signal from the Bird HQ server to open the charging port. Since you don’t have that signal, the port stays closed.

The Fix (The Bypass):

  • Warning: Advanced users only. You cannot use the charging port. You must open the deck and wire a new charging connector (XT-60) directly to the battery discharge wires, bypassing the “Smart BMS” entirely.

  • Note: If you are not comfortable with soldering, you must buy a “Non-Rental” replacement battery.

Reason 4: The Charger Voltage Test (Is the Brick Dead?)

Sometimes the Gotrax charger itself is the liar. It shows a green light (power on) but outputs zero amps.

  1. Get a Multimeter (Set to DC Volts).

  2. Test the Charger Tip:

    • Gotrax GXL V2: Should read 42V.

    • Hiboy S2 Pro: Should read 42V.

    • 48V Scooters: Should read 54.6V.

  3. The Diagnosis: If your charger reads 41V or lower, it is “weak.” It can light the LED but cannot push power into the battery. Buy a replacement charger.
